Bayou Grills and Beach Bars: The Deep-Rooted History Behind Creekwood Grill in Cypress, Texas
Every musician remembers the first time they step onto a stage steeped in local history. There is a distinct, grounding energy in a venue that has weathered decades of community shifts, long before you ever plug in a guitar or strike a chord. It’s etched into the layout of the property, felt in the acoustics of the room, and carried by the generations of families who have gathered there under different signs.
Creekwood Grill in Cypress, Texas, is exactly one of those legendary spaces.
Operating today as a family and community-oriented restaurant and live music venue, the historic property on Telge Road has spent over 80 years evolving alongside the Cy-Fair community. For working musicians, stepping onto this stage means sharing a lineage with generations of local talent, honky-tonk heroes, and backyard acoustic storytellers.
To truly appreciate the space as it stands today, you have to look at the fascinating chapters that built it:
The 1940s (The Beginnings): The core structure originally started its life about a mile north, serving the rural community as a grocery and feed store called Rippers.
The Late 1970s & 1980s (P.O.’s Burgers): Owner Philip Dahl physically relocated the
building to its current Telge Road location. He revamped it to open P.O.’s Burgers, creating one of the very first true restaurants in the Cypress area. It quickly became a massive local hub—especially for students from nearby Cy-Fair High School—hosting countless little league parties and family gatherings under its expansive outdoor pavilion.
1999 (Cypress Saloon): Recognizing the community's hunger for real Texas music, the outdoor pavilion was enclosed to create a dedicated honky-tonk and live venue named Cypress Saloon. It earned a stellar reputation as one of Cypress’ first major live music landmarks, hosting a long list of prominent Texas bands and setting the standard for local entertainment.
The 2010s (The Shack): Before transitioning to its current layout, the property famously operated as The Shack Burger Resort. It was a wildly popular, quirky joint celebrated for its open-air, family-friendly backyard atmosphere and eccentric culinary style.
2018–Present (Creekwood Grill & P.O.’s Icehouse): Partners Brian Sandel and Mark McShaffry took over the reins in 2018 to establish Creekwood Grill. They brilliantly brought the property's history full circle by preserving the main family-friendly hub and transforming the original, standalone P.O.’s building next door into an adults-only hangout called P.O.’s Ice House—keeping the spirit of the original 1980s burger joint alive and well. While founded in 2018, the venue truly cemented its status as an absolute staple of the community by the end of 2020.

When you tune into this venue spotlight, you can expect four very distinct things from the room:
A Dedicated Leadership Team: A great room requires a tight crew behind the scenes keeping the machine running smoothly. Alongside owners Brian Sandel and Mark McShaffry, the day-to-day operations are steered by General Manager Jake Wade, Assistant General Manager Stephen Pitts, Service Manager Angela Artieda, and Facilities Manager Chris Frank. Their collective focus ensures that both the hospitality and the live entertainment infrastructure remain top-tier.
A Welcoming Sunday Gathering Space: The venue's commitment to community extends well beyond regular dining hours. Every Sunday morning at 9:30 AM before the restaurant opens to the public, the main room transforms into a house of worship for Cypress Chapel. Spearheaded by Pastor Jacob Theiss, this local mission plant values building natural, low-pressure environments for families to connect. The leadership team at Creekwood proudly opens its doors to host this ministry weekly.
Deep-Rooted Educational Support: Creekwood Grill goes far beyond standard restaurant hospitality by actively investing back into local schools. The venue has officially "adopted" two nearby campuses—Arnold Middle School and Millsap Elementary—supporting them directly through free food provisions and ongoing monetary donations to champion local education.
Annual Philanthropy & Festival Culture: Continuing their outward focus, Creekwood Grill is a staple participant in the annual A Taste of Cy-Fair Festival. Every year, the venue joins forces with regional culinary leaders to raise vital funding and awareness for Cy-Hope, a prominent local non-profit dedicated to supporting at-risk youth through impactful enrichment programs across the community.
A room is just an empty building until decades of songs, stories, and neighborly connection give it a pulse. Whether you are a fan looking for a great evening set, or a player evaluating your next booking target, Creekwood Grill remains a cornerstone of our regional music scene.
Of course, you can't talk about a true Texas landmark without talking about the food. While the online crowd will quickly tell you to try the famous Cypresswood Burger or a basket of Pesto Fries, my personal allegiance lies squarely with a different Texas staple. As a lifelong connoisseur of the dish, I can tell you first-hand that Creekwood serves up a truly phenomenal Chicken Fried Steak. It is perfectly tender, beautifully crisped, and easily stands on its own as a reason to make the trip out to Telge Road.
